Nonce Intermediate

A nonce is the value a miner changes on each attempt so that hashing the same block produces a different result.

Since a hash function returns the same output for the same input, miners need something to vary. The nonce is that field: increment it, hash again, check whether the result meets the target, repeat billions of times per second.

It is the mechanical heart of proof of work, and the reason mining is brute force rather than cleverness.

This definition is educational and not financial advice. Crypto is volatile and high-risk — always do your own research.
