What ETF flows actually tell you
Net inflows mean more money moved into the funds that day, funded by real buying of the underlying asset; net outflows mean the reverse. A single day is usually noise — issuers rebalance and large allocators move in blocks.
What to watch
- A multi-day streak in one direction is a stronger signal than any single day, especially alongside price moving the same way.
- Cumulative net flow (the running total since launch) shows the multi-month trend.
- Flows reflect ETF-investor behaviour specifically — not the whole market, which also trades on spot exchanges.
