Efficiency in joules per terahash (J/TH) is the standard way to compare mining hardware: lower is better. It is power draw divided by hashrate, so it tells you how much electricity a machine burns for the same amount of work. What is a good J/TH figure?
Lower is better. Current-generation Bitcoin ASICs are broadly in the high teens to mid twenties of joules per terahash; older machines are considerably higher, which is why they stop being profitable first when prices fall.
Why compare efficiency instead of raw hashrate?
Raw hashrate tells you how much work a machine does, but not what it costs to do it. Two machines with the same hashrate can have very different power bills, and electricity is the dominant ongoing cost.
Are the preset numbers measured?
No. They come from manufacturers' published spec sheets. Real draw at the wall varies with firmware, tuning, ambient temperature and power-supply losses.
