Layer 2 Intermediate

A layer 2 is a network built on top of a blockchain that processes transactions off the main chain while inheriting its security.

Rollups such as Arbitrum and Optimism batch many transactions and settle proofs or data back to Ethereum, achieving lower fees than the base layer.

Because a layer 2 borrows security rather than producing its own, there is nothing to mine on it and no base-layer staking for its token.
