The verdict

One of the most efficient SHA-256 machines generally available, and efficiency is the number that decides whether a miner survives a bear market. At roughly 17.5 joules per terahash it does meaningfully more work per watt than the S19 generation it replaces. That advantage is real but it is not magic: at typical household electricity prices this machine still loses money, and the break-even power price is the figure prospective buyers should be looking at rather than the headline hashrate.

The Antminer S21 is the machine most people mean when they talk about current-generation Bitcoin mining hardware. It is worth understanding why, and worth being precise about what it does and does not solve.

Efficiency is the whole argument

Headline hashrate sells machines; efficiency keeps them running. A miner’s revenue is set by its share of network hashrate, but its cost is set by how much electricity it burns to produce that share. That makes joules per terahash the number that actually decides whether a rig survives a downturn.

At roughly 17.5 J/TH, the S21 is a genuine generational improvement over the S19 XP family. In practical terms it means more of each dollar of revenue survives contact with the power bill. It does not mean the machine prints money.

What it costs to run

At 3,500 W of continuous draw, an S21 consumes about 84 kWh per day. Multiply that by your electricity rate and you have your daily cost before you have earned anything. At ten cents per kilowatt hour that is roughly eight dollars and forty cents a day, every day, whether or not the coin price cooperates.

Noise, heat and the practical reality

Specification sheets rarely convey what 75 dB of continuous fan noise is like to live near. It is not a background hum. Combined with 3,500 W of heat that has to go somewhere, this is equipment for a garage, an outbuilding or a hosting facility, not a spare bedroom.

The difficulty problem nobody advertises

Buy an S21 today and its hashrate is fixed for the rest of its life. The network’s hashrate is not. As more machines come online, difficulty adjusts upward and your fixed slice of the network gets thinner. Every profitability projection, including ours, holds difficulty constant because forecasting it honestly is not possible. Read any multi-month projection with that in mind: the direction of the error is predictable, and it is not in your favour.

Who this machine suits

Someone with genuinely cheap power, somewhere to put a loud hot box, and a realistic view of payback periods measured in years rather than months. Someone paying residential electricity rates and hoping to cover it with mining revenue is, on current numbers, going to be disappointed, and we would rather say that plainly than sell the dream.

It is joules of energy consumed per terahash of work. Lower is better. It lets you compare machines directly: a unit at 17.5 J/TH does the same work as one at 30 J/TH for roughly forty percent less electricity, which over a year of continuous operation is the difference between a viable machine and a space heater.

Can I run one at home?

Technically yes, practically it is difficult. At around 75 dB it is roughly as loud as a vacuum cleaner running continuously, and 3,500 W needs a dedicated circuit and a plan for removing the heat. Most home deployments end because of noise and heat rather than economics.
